5 Tips for Your Engagement Session

the blog

I absolutely love shooting engagement sessions! Engagement sessions are basically all of the cute couple pictures without the stress of the wedding day. I include a complimentary engagement session in all of my wedding packages because it gives me an opportunity to get to know my couples before the wedding day. An engagement session will also help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera, and in front of me, so we can get the very best pictures on your wedding day.

It’s always a little intimidating to have your pictures taken… If you’re nervous, I totally understand! That’s why I like to be behind the camera instead of in front of it! 😉

Here are 5 tips for your engagement session that will make your session prep a little easier and less stressful!

1. Choose your outfits carefully

When choosing outfits, try to avoid trends. Also try to stick with simple colors and patterns. I usually recommend one dressier outfit, and one casual outfit. Even if you don’t usually dress up, flowy dresses photograph SO well and I guarantee that dressing up will give your pictures a timeless and classic look. Most importantly, choose outfits that you’re comfortable wearing. You’ll be the most confident if you’re comfortable with the clothes you’re wearing.

2. Communicate about your locations

Decide ahead of time what type of background you want for your pictures and then communicate that to me. Don’t just choose a random park if you’re not sure! First, decide if you want a cityscape, rustic setting, park settings, trees, water, or a special spot that has meaning to you and your fiance. Next, if you’re not sure where to find the exact type of setting you want, let me know. I have several favorite locations all around the Quad Cities and Iowa that I can recommend. I’m also willing to travel if you have a location in mind that is farther away.

Here’s a blog post with sample pictures and descriptions of some of my favorite locations.

3. Empty your pockets

This one is so simple but makes such a huge difference! You don’t want to have key chains or phones showing through your pockets! I usually try to remind my couples of this before we get started.

4. Relax and be yourself!

It’s natural to feel awkward in front of the camera, but don’t worry! I’m going to help you along the way during your session. You don’t have to be a pro at posing or a model to have a great engagement session. Relax, enjoy the time together, and make a date out of it. I’ll worry about creating images that you’ll love. We’ll have a great time!

5. Don’t be afraid to go all out

If you want to have your hair or makeup professionally done, go for it! If you want to bring props, like a bouquet, you should! If you want to incorporate a special activity that you guys love to do, we can! I want you to love your pictures, so don’t be afraid to go all out and make the session your own. I love it when my couples bring their dog or a beautiful bouquet to their engagement sessions!
