What to Wear for Family Pictures

the blog

I’m definitely not a fashion expert…But after shooting families for 5 years, I’m starting to know what looks good on camera! Here are 3 outfit tips to help you decide what to wear for your family pictures.

1. Avoid trends. Try to stay away from clothes that are too trendy. The main idea here is that you don’t want to look back at your family pictures in 5 years and cringe about what you were wearing!

2. Simple is best. Bold patterns can sometimes be distracting and trendy. Try to stay away from patterned leggings or patterned scarfs. Also try to keep it simple with your color scheme. Colors that always look good on camera include black, white, grey, light blue, light pink, olive, mustard, and maroon.

3. Don’t be afraid to dress up. Even if your family wouldn’t dress up this much in “real life”, you will not regret dressing up for your family pictures! Dresses and dress clothes photograph SO well and can really take your pictures from “good” to “amazing”! Dress clothes are often less trendy and will always make your pictures look great.

I’ve also put together several different outfit combinations with different color schemes to help you get started as you think about your family pictures. There’s also a lot of other outfit ideas that I haven’t put together, so don’t be afraid to wear something unique. These ideas are just to help know what types of clothing and colors photograph well.
